Exactly.
Geocaching.
Have you heard of it? Probably, I am usually the last one invited to the party.Anyways geocaching is our new hobby. We have spent the last 3 weeks trudging over the river and through the woods looking for hidden treasure.
Basically geocaching it using latitude and longitude coordinates to find a specific spot where there is or at least should be some sort of cache hidden. We have successfully found 6 caches as of this weekend. They have ranged from small pill bottle and film canisters to Tupperware containers to personally the coolest one yet a teeny tiny little magnet with a strip of paper in it.
We have even started a little geocaching kit in the car so we are always ready to go. We have a small stash of goodies to drop too. Some of the caches have little trinkets or coins in them that you can snag in return for dropping something else in.
I think the coolest part is where are discovering all of these amazing new places right where we live! This past weekend we found a an old hidden mill which happens to be about 5 minutes from where hubby and I shared our first apartment. We had no clue this place even existed and it was awesome!
We have been using hubby's Blackberry to track the caches so far but he just ordered us this awesome GPS that will {fingers crossed} work better and is a bit more rugged for the woods!

So have you been geocaching yet?
What's your favorite part or coolest find so far?

How very fun! I have wanted to go but we don't have a GPS.. maybe someday soon we will step into this century ;-) Looks like you guys have been having a ton of fun!
Woo hoo!! You guys sound like you are off to a great start! We are heading out to 'H is for Hidden Mill' today!! I love the picture of Maddie in front of it! You hit the nail right on the head when you said that it takes you to places you never knew about, I think that is why we enjoy it so much!!
Where do you find the latitudes and longitudes? Is there some sort of geocaching website or something?
oh how fun! this is a pretty big thing here in the seattle area! i cant wait to do it with corbin when he's older! im glad u and little maddie are having a fun time with it! :)
We've been geocaching for about a year and a half and we love it! It is great fun for the whole family, and cheap! Our favorite "cache" was one that my students hid for a class project that my family went and found. It was out in the desert, and we hiked to get there... so fun! We load the GPS with geocaches and take it with us on vacation. It is great to go exploring in a new area!
I've been wanting to do this forever, but I thought my boys might still be a little young...if Maddie is doing it then I guess they're the perfect age too! I checked out the site, and found a few right near our house - I'm excited to try it this weekend! Thanks for posting this!
Is there a trick to finding the caches? Our family has tried 4 different locations and we haven't found ANYTHING (except a dirty story that I'm hoping wasn't the cache). I'm so bummed!
