Mock King Cake

Last year I won a King Cake in a blog giveaway and my oh my was it delicious! As a cheese danish loving girl it was pure bliss! Instead of ordering one, or going through the hassle of using a real recipe for a King Cake I decided to spice up my breakfast favorite and turn it into a mock King Cake in time for Fat Tuesday.

Ingredients:
2 cans of crescent rolls
1 1/2 packages of cream cheese
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/2 can cherry pie filling (optional)
Separate each triangle of crescent roll dough and arrange them in a sunburst like circle. I use my Pampered Chef round baking stone for this but a good size cookie sheet would work well too.

For your filling combine cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla extract. You could definitely reduce the cream cheese amount to only one package but like I said cheese danish is my favorite so more is better in my book.

To make things easier on myself I scooped all of my cream cheese filling into a piping bag but you could always use a large Ziplock or skip this skip altogether.

Like I said I went the easier way so all I had to do was squirt the filling around the ring. If using a spoon you will want to try to heap the filling evenly among the ring and try not to make too big of a mess!

Now feel free to skip this step but I was feeling indulgent and decided to top my King Cake with canned cherry filling too. I tried to minimize the mess in the oven by only adding the cherries and trying to skip the extra gooey filling included in the can. Instead of cherries I would also highly recommend slivered almonds with a swirl of honey too!

Now it's time to fold your dough ends in and under to make a nice tidy little ring.

I baked my ring at 375F for about 18 minutes or until a nice golden brown.

Now to make it a mock King Cake vice a regular ole cherry cheese danish I topped it off with a drizzle of powdered sugar and milk glaze and then dusted it in green (for faith), gold (for power) and purple (for justice) sugar.

Yum!

Now if I was to be in true King Cake fashion I would have shoved a tiny baby somewhere inside the cake but sadly I did not have a tiny plastic baby lying around the house!
